Shopping in October

After following Nathalie's Blog for quite some time now, I have decided to become more like her. *laugh*
She accounts for every dime she spends on groceries and knows how much she saves by taking advantage of sales, coupons, rebates, reward points, etc.She also divides her purchases by food groups to make it easier to see where the bulk of the money is going. The savings are impressive. I, on the other hand, tend to pick up loss leaders for the most part. I don't have a specific grocery shopping day. I seldom remember to check for coupons until after I get home. Because my husband is often in town, I will ask him to pick up loss leaders or items from my grocery list on his way back from somewhere. Shopping ends up being kind of "hodge-podge". On the other hand, I keep my $300 budgeted money in a jar at home, and when it is gone, it is gone. We take the money out of the jar, and return the change left over as well as the receipts and put them back into the jar. But I haven't been writing it down. So because it is the beginning of October, I will post my grocery shopping here, by categories and amounts. This is my first shop of the month.
Produce and juice......$10.21

I only had three items on my LIST....celery, peppers and cheese.  Cheese is on sale this week at Food Basics, but because I only picked one place to do my shopping, I picked No-Frills because it had the most number  of sale items that I was interested in. I will have my Sweetie pick up the cheese and other loss leaders from Food Basics next time he is by there. Unfortunately, celery is not on sale anywhere. I paid full price of $1.47. Peppers were on for 97 cents a pound....not a great sale price at $4.03 for the bag,  but the best price in town. Tomato juice was 97 cents; but the greatest deal was 5 pounds of onions and 5 pounds of turnip for $1.87 a bag.

Dairy.......$7.41

We can buy cheap margarine, but Becel is our preferred brand because it is heart-smart,  and it was on sale for $2.47 each

Processed food..........$7.46
Quaker cereal was only $1.97 a package. Stuff and Such was on sale for  88 cents a box. I have lots of  bread cubes in the freezer to make my own dressing, but I read on someone's blog this week that this instant stuffing (as well as instant rice and instant potatoes) are a good starch to have in the pantry for emergency preparedness because you  add it to hot water.

Proteins........$22.91

Eye of round is only $2.97 a pound this week (cheaper than hamburger), and I picked up two packages of Oktoberfest sausage at $1.97 each. That roast is approximately 6 lbs 4 oz. and I have cut it into 2 smaller roasts.

My total expenditure for groceries so far is $47.99

Miscellaneous........$17.37

I was very excited to find crossword puzzle books for my Sweetie Pie. He loves to do these and I haven't been able to find any this summer in any of  the Dollar stores. They only cost $1 each, which is cheaper anyway than the Dollar Store at $1.25 each. I bought 7 toothpastes and 2 more tooth brushes at 97 cents each for the Advent calendars, and a few more calendar/stocking items I can wrap this weekend. Although I picked these up in the grocery store, this money will come out of another reserve.

Finally, I have finished up the two bags of Macintosh apples. Applesauce is cooking in the crockpot, and the last of the apples are sliced and frozen to make hot fruit crumbles when the cold winds are blowing the snow around. Now I only have two more bags of apples to do up this coming week....but not this weekend. I am going to take a break from apples. I finally had to turn the furnace on today. The interior of the house was at 57 degrees F. That is cold. Only 2 weeks ago, it was unseasonable hot and humid. What a change. Have a great weekend everyone.

  1. You can't go wrong, frugality-wise, with a system of "I have $300 in cash for food and when it's gone, we don't buy anything else"! Of course, you need to make sure you're stocked up too, and it looks like you're doing a great job at that.

You do know that since you paid full price for celery this week, it'll be on sale next week, right? That always seems to happen to me :) I think the cheapest I have ever seen turnips down here was $2.99 a lb. Seriously. So $1.87 for 5 lbs... wow! Do you freeze them? My neighbor gave me rutabaga that his dad grew last year or the year before and I had found a recipe to cook it, it was so good. I had always read Russian tales where they spoke of rutabagas but never tasted one before. I wish he would give me more veggies but I don't want to ask (seems greedy), lol.

I had been told that food is much more expensive in Canada, but it seems to be that you're getting better prices on some items than we do down here. Are those full tubes of Colgate for just $0.97? I usually have to redeem a $2.00 store coupon to get that price. That's an awesome price on the eye of round! I've been looking for marked down beef to use in the crockpot and the cheapest I've found it recently was $4.97/lb.

57 F... brrr! Meanwhile, Greg makes us turn the AC down because he's "hot" when it's 76 in the living room. I can't wait until it's cool enough to open the windows!

Hot Fruit Crumbles sounds so so good. I wouldn't mind having some right now even if it's not cold, hahaha.

  2. I do freeze rutabaga, but I usually cook and mash it first. This was an exceptional price and I am thinking I might go back and buy some more this week. The next best thing about these turnips was that they were small (there were 5 veggies in this bag), so they were extremely easy to cut and peel. I have used two already for our dinner on Saturday which fed 4 people and some left over. Turnips last quite a long time as well, so I probably won't cook and freeze these ones.

And you have heard right. Groceries do tend to be more expensive up here. I am always a bit jealous when I see some of your prices. So when I announce that eye of round roast is being sold at $2.97 a pound, I know it is a huge bargain in any market. The veggies are a good bargain as well. They are usually locally grown and every fall I look for these 5 lb. bags to go on sale. Usually it is potatoes, onions, beets, and carrots; but this year, they are offering the 5 pound bags of turnip for the same price.
And yes those are full tubes of toothpaste. They (and the Colgate toothbrushes) often go on sale at this particular grocery store.

This is usually why the bulk of my shopping is the loss leaders. When I find a good price, I try to buy more than one to put away in my pantry or freezer to last hopefully until the next sale cycle.

  3. I love the separation of the things by category...not all of us can be as organized as Nathalie!! I am always jealous of her meal plan because she writes what she needs from the pantry, freezer, and store. I have never been really great about the money in the jar system but that sounds like it works great for you. This was one week shopping and you normally only go once a week? It looks like you had a great haul!! I have never heard of stuff and such but it sounds interesting!! Going to have to check it out :) We just used up an old box of stuffing that I had in the closet because I have been making it from scratch instead of buying it at the store and it was really yummy!! I can't wait for the winter season to have lots more stuffing :)

  4. Yes her meal plans always look so organized and sound so yummy. I don't post meal plans because I have issues with commitment. *laugh*

The money in the jar works for "us", because it can be seen by both my husband and I. He is more careful with the grocery money if he thinks that is it. The same is true of the gas money. He has $350 a month, so he has to be careful. We "can't afford" needless trips into town. It forces him to batch errands.

If you see my weekend post, you will discover that I do not only shop once a week. I may go a few times a week, or I may not buy anything for several weeks. It really is a "hodge-podge" of a schedule.

Thank you for commenting. I have been lurking around your blog for a while now since being introduced by Nathalie.

  5. Oops! That should read $250 a month for gas.
