So I did no windows downstairs yet. I took my bow rake into the hardware store to see if they could put on a new handle, but the clerk just looked at me like I had two heads. I guess I need to buy a new rake. Apparently, hardware stores don't do that kind of service any more. Excuse me, did my age just show?? I remember a time (I didn't think too long ago) when you took your tools to the country hardware store to have them fixed. Now, they just sell you tools. Anyways, I haven't bought a new one yet so I haven't cleared any more of my back yard of rocks, branches, etc. after the vegetation was cut down. I did manage to move about 6 wheel barrow loads of gravel from the pile in the driveway one afternoon, but it was too hot to continue working. Yesterday was another gorgeous day and I should have cut my lawn again, but I didn't. So I hate myself for that. I feel my priorities are not in line.
On the plus side, I was successful in lasting two weeks before going out to do a major grocery shopping trip yesterday morning after my second medical appointment of the week with the nurse practitioner. She was able to unblock my ear canal. Yay! I shopped at two stores...Food Basics and No Frills.
Frozen produce cost me $44.00 Three packages of winter vegetables and 2 pkgs. of green beans for $2 each, frozen spinach for $1 and 3 bags of imperfect frozen fruit for $11 each. These are all no-name brands. It doesn't get cheaper than this.
Fresh veggies cost $13.70 Broccoli was on sale for 88 cents each (I bought 3), romaine lettuce was only 87 cents, zucchini was on sale for 98 cents a pound, local cabbage was only 89 cents a pound, and rainbow peppers were even cheaper than Giant Tiger at only $1.88, so I bought another pkg. Fresh mushrooms were also on sale for $1.67
Dairy cost $45.39 That is a whole week's budget right there. Cheese at the lowest price in town at $4.44 each 400 gm block, yoghurt and cream cheese on sale for $1.97 each. Cream was on sale for $2.49. I paid full price for homo milk, 2 dozen eggs, and no-name cottage cheese.
Pantry items cost $8.96 Cans of tomato cost 87 cents each.
Non-food items cost $6.97 Today's shopping cost me $ 147.31 Add on the mini shops from Giant Tiger twice over the past week ($6.95 + $17.30) , and my total is now $171.56 My first shop of September I spent $105.84, so my total so far this month is now $277.40 That is well above my "budget" of $50 a week. I will have to continue this exercise of shopping every other week in order to work out a more realistic budget for myself. By not shopping EVERY week, I do think I saved more money. I usually buy no-name or store-brands because they still cost less than using coupons. If a brand name is cheaper by being on sale, I will buy that item.
Bless from My Two Cents has been following my menu reports to see how I have been using up my groceries, so I need to catch her up on what I have been eating the last few days.
Monday: I had the last two bowls of chicken veggie soup for lunch. Dinner was pork chops with veggies in a cream sauce (butter and cream cheese melted with Parmesan and milk added)
Tuesday: sauteed shredded cabbage from the freezer with cream sauce added. Dinner was the last of the cream sauce baked over frozen veggies and the last 3 Italian sausage. I loved that cream sauce.
Wednesday: Lunch was leftovers from Tuesday night and dinner was chicken stir-fry over cauliflower rice. The chicken meat was also taken from the freezer from when I made my last crock pot of chicken broth the week before.
Thursday: I made a huge pan of dirty rice with a pound of hamburger fried with a little onion and seasoned salt and simmered with 1/2 can of stewed tomatoes from the freezer. I mixed it in with a container of cauliflower rice. Yummy. It made lots, so I ate the rest of it for dinner.
Friday: I had eaten the last two eggs on Thursday morning, so for breakfast I warmed up 2 slices of bacon from that package I bought at Giant Tiger on Wednesday and fried for the freezer, with a bowl of steamed cauliflower. It was already past noon when I returned from grocery shopping, so I ate a large bowl of cottage cheese for lunch. For dinner, I roasted some frozen veggies with shredded cheese on top and 3 Italian sausage. There are leftovers for my lunch today.
Susan, I would consider sitting in front of your computer researching ideas for Christmas gifts, etc., as X number of hours spent on research! You can't do a project, no matter what it is, without doing some background research on it and that takes time!
ReplyDeleteSo glad your ear canal was unblocked! Now, no one can accuse you of having "selective hearing"! LOL!
You did very well with your fortnightly grocery shopping! I am presuming what you bought yesterday is meant for the next two weeks, also? Maybe you need to allow yourself a budget of $75/week for the first couple of months ($300/month), get used to that, and then, try for the $50/week.
Thank you for posting your menu plan for last week. :) Have you planned the meals for the next two weeks? I am seeing eggs for breakfasts; sausages, fish, and chicken for dinners, leftovers and cottage cheese for lunch. Maybe more cream sauce since you liked it and you bought more cream cheese? I am remembering a time when I went on a low carb diet, many, many years ago. I lost a lot of weight but couldn't maintain that diet. Then I gained all the weight I had lost and more! My doctor would like me to go on a low carb diet, again, so I must make some serious efforts to change my eating habits. You are an inspiration to me.
You were correct to assume that this shopping trip is also for the next 2 weeks. Hopefully, I will have learned from my past mistake and portion out the dairy a little more thoughtfully. But regardless, if I run out of something I will try not to go out to buy it. I am sure that saved me from spending even more last week. I bought more meat this week for variety, but I still had a package of 3 chicken thighs in the freezer. I put that in my crock pot with 2 liters of water to make another chicken stock for soup this week. I will eat 2 of the thighs tonight with some mashed turnip I found in the freezer. I also have 2 pounds left of the ground beef I bought last time. I also have more pork in the freezer from the purchase I made last month. I also pulled some cooked ground chicken from my freezer today. I will likely make a shepherd's pie with a mashed cauliflower crust with it tomorrow night. To answer your question, no I do not usually plan my meals ahead. I just have a couple of ideas for future meals, but no set plan.
DeleteYour meals sound delicious!
ReplyDeleteI also feel like research hours in front of the computer are of value and not just a waste of time. Your cards and other projects always look wonderful and without additional research you would not be able to add to your ideas!
I think I consider sitting in front of the computer as wasting my time when I consider all the other things that I feel I should be doing, and not getting done. (especially in good weather, when there is a lot of yard work I could be doing) But like I said, it is all work that needs to be done, so I should just do the thing that inspires me. Because of the "research" I did over those few days, I have drawn up a supplies list for materials I need to buy and a timeline for gifts to make.
