We built a 2X4 wall inside the current wall. It has to be insulated and dry-walled. In the rest of the house, we ripped out the walls to the outside timbers. We got rid of all the old lathe and plaster and any "insulation" that was inside. Sometimes, there is absolutely no insulation in the walls.....just an air pocket. Sometimes they used sawdust, horsehair, newspaper, straw, anything they could get their hands on in the 1830's. This time however, we decided that we would just build another wall inside the room against the outside wall that is currently covered with wood panelling, and put proper insulation in that. We still have to put a 2X4 across the bottom of the window with supports and extend the deeper window sill out into the room. |
The ceiling and light look really nice!
ReplyDeleteSo... it's the middle of winter and it's snowing and you've decided to rip out all the insulation in your house but you're working on replacing the ceiling BEFORE replacing the insulation? Aren't you freezing?! Inquiring mind wants to know!
No, no. LOL. I should have said, in the past, that is how we replaced the outside walls of the house. As we renovated each room of the house, we would rip everything out to the outside walls. This would take days. We would need shovels and wheelbarrows to take all that crap out of the house. But now it is winter, so we cannot do that. Nor do we have the time to do it this way. So, instead of demolishing the wall, we decided to build another wall and butt it up to the old one. We will put in the insulation and then drywall over top, so we will have a double wall.....the original and an insulated 2X4 wall. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeletePhew! I'm relieved for you. But I also thought you were kind of a badass, lol.
DeleteOh Susan poor you I hate snow it is threatening here and quite a few places around us already have it but happily it seems to be missing us at the moment.
DeleteWow you have been doing a lot of work on your house.
