A Rainy Friday Afternoon

Remember when I first put in a few plants in my planter?

Well it has started to fill out some.
After the Costco pickup this morning, my husband and I stopped into Walmart on the way home. We were almost completely out of dog food. I didn't really need to buy groceries, but because I was already in there, I picked up a few things we were short on.
I needed to buy dog food at WalMart.
The soft baked cookies were completely FREE.

My husband is a meat and potatoes guy. He isn't fond of rice, quinoa, couscous, or the like. Whereas my son and I will eat grains...... my Sweetie Pie???  not so much (unless I bury them deep inside a casserole) It has taken me years to get him to eat pasta.  There have been no sales of our preferred margarine lately, so we have been making do with the Imperial margarine that I bought last week for my baking. The soft baked cookies I picked up for visiting grandchildren because I had a coupon that made these absolutely free of charge. I "borrowed" $20 from next month's grocery allowance, in order to buy these items today. Why was I short this month?  Do you remember I told you the price of garbage tags went up from $2 a bag to $2.50 a bag on July 1st? Well at the end of June I spent $60 to buy 30 tags at the $2 price. This should last me a while.

Cranberry Hootycreek biscuits

Last night, after 7 pm, I washed a large load of dark clothes. So that when I returned from Kingston this morning, I hung those out on the line straight away. Then I mowed the front and back lawns because I did not do them yesterday as I had planned. I slept for two hours in the afternoon, and woke up GROUCHY. I forgot to turn on the dishwasher last night when I went upstairs to bed, so I washed them this morning before 11 am. (Hydro prime rate), and I decided to throw these cookies into the oven. It is a different cookie recipe from here that I have been wanting to try. (dried cranberries, white choco chips and walnuts) YUM. I brought the clothes back in before the rain started.
My husband and I leave for Smith Falls tomorrow. Have a great weekend everyone. The rain will end tonight and the week-end is supposed to be a scorcher. Stay cool.

  1. Your planter is gorgeous!

Yay for freebies! Don't you just love getting something for free? I usually avoid Walmart so when I go in for something that I just can't get anywhere else, I always end up looking around and spending more than I intended because I tell myself that this way, I won't have to go back for a long, long time. I just dislike pretty much everything about Walmart from the always squeaky and somewhat dirty carts that I get, to the crowds no matter what time of the day, to the confusing (to me!) layout of the food departments and to the hugeness of it all. I especially dislike having to trek from one side of the store (food) to the other (toiletries) with the squeaky cart! But they do have some good prices in general. I'll have to go there next week when my laser cat toy comes in, since I selected the "Ship to Store" option to avoid paying for shipping. This reminds me that I ought to put a list together of items that I might want to buy there. I still have some credit on the $10 Energizer e-gift cards that I earned last year.

Your homemade cookies sound delicious! I might need to make my own soon! I think I do have white chocolate chips in my fridge somewhere...

I did NOT want to weed my garden today. but I kept on thinking about how you weed for three hours at a time so I decided not to be a wimp... however, the extreme temperatures made me give up after 45 minutes. So maybe I am a wimp after all, he he he.

Lastly... what is a garbage tag? I'm totally lost and I'd like to understand why you spent so much money on them :)

Have a great rest of your day!

    1. Time for a little political history lesson. Over the years, the Federal and Provincial governments have been downloading various programs and services onto the Municipal levels of government without the financial support to get the jobs done. Most municipalities, instead of dumping all the additional costs onto property taxes, have adopted a "pay as you throw" program to look after the shortfall. So if you want to throw away a garbage bag in my municipality, you need to pay $2.50 Recycling is free. Composting is free. So it forces you to reduce, reuse and recycle. Like Hydro rates, if you want to save money, you must become more environmentally conscious. At least I feel like I have more control over my finances. If someone wants to pay to throw away 4 bags of garbage a week, I am not forced to pay the same "taxes" as him. I choose to recycle, to pay less. The garbage tags are actually stickers that you put on the outside of the plastic bag. Other municipalities do it differently, and some charge differently. Hope I have explained this to you.
Concerning Walmart, I rarely go. I don't have anything against the store. In fact, I like to browse in the smaller store in a neighbouring town. Like you, I don't like the crowds. WalMart has the very best price for our Pedigree dog food, but not the best prices overall on groceries. I like their toiletry prices and I like to find bargains on their seasonal merchandise.
Lastly, I spent 3 hours weeding because the temperatures here cooled down tremendously, and because it HAD to get done. I could not possibly last in Florida heat in the dead of summer. The fact that you spent 45 minutes in the garden, just boggles my mind. And also, I worked for 3 hours and slept for 2 hours. Does that sound like unlimited energy to you?
